When you use maps or your own instinct, what would be the best path so that I can reach the destination faster, then you are sort of user of A* pathfinding algorithm.
The algo works as finding the shortest path possible between two nodes even when there are numerous obstacles in the way. It runs on heuristic functions, and to let you understand over voice is really a hard part.
